Adult males can reach a weight of up to 80 kilograms, while the average weight of bitches is about 40-50 kilograms. A characteristic feature of the appearance of the belt is a luxuriant, slightly moody and medium-length coat, which is why the Tibetan Mastiff by many resembles a lion. The dog has widely spaced eyes and hanging ears, slightly forward, usually brown in color.

Characteristics of the Tibetan Mastiff

Due to the fact that the Tibetan Mastiff was originally used to defend and guard the herd, therefore it is a born watchdog and defender hence these are its dominant traits in character. For strangers it is extremely distrustful, so a person who has never had contact with a dog before should think twice before entering the property guarded by a mastiff. For its owner, on the other hand, the dog is very friendly, although due to its independent character, it is often the owner who decides when it wants to cuddle. It is very forgiving and gentle towards children, so you can let them play with the fluffy pet without any fear. Tibetan Mastiff is a dog, for which his family is a priority. By his owners usually welcomes new guests with enthusiasm, but when he is left with them alone, his primitive instinct of defending may come to the fore.

Tibetan Mastiff is a great observer and sensational guardian. The dog is happiest when it can freely run around the yard. Mastiffs are very hardy dogs, that's why harsh winter doesn't make a big impression on him. Quadrupeds need space, but they also need to be close to their families, so they will definitely be unhappy if they have to be locked in an isolated pen.

Tibetan mastiffs are very intelligent dogs, however, working closely with a human is not their calling, hence they are quite difficult to train. However, this does not mean that it is impossible to influence the dog's behavior to any extent. With the right approach, above all consistent and patient, you can set clear boundaries for the dog and teach it many useful things. The final character of the dog is most influenced by the adolescent period. Puppies are very playful and energetic, so the best form of their training is learning through play. In relation to both a small and adult dog, there is no violence or forceful training involved. Then, the dog may start to feel a strong fear of the owner and, as a consequence, it will become closed, unavailable and distrustful.
